It also plays an important role in the absorption of water, vitamins, minerals, and electrolytes and in the elimination of waste from the body.

Digestion begins in the mouth, where food is broken down into smaller pieces through chewing and mixed with saliva. After swallowing, food travels through the esophagus to the stomach.

In the stomach, food is mixed with gastric acid and digestive enzymes, which help break it down further particularly proteins and transform it into a semi-liquid mixture. This mixture then passes into the small intestine, where most digestion and nutrient absorption take place.

In the small intestine, digestive enzymes from the pancreas and bile produced by the liver help break down fats, proteins, and carbohydrates into forms that can be absorbed into the bloodstream and used by the body.

The remaining undigested material then passes into the large intestine (colon), where water and electrolytes are absorbed. The remaining waste is formed into stool, stored in the rectum, and ultimately eliminated from the body.

Together, the organs of the digestive system work in a coordinated manner to digest food, absorb essential nutrients, maintain fluid and electrolyte balance, and remove waste.

The digestive system is responsible for breaking down the food we eat into nutrients that the body can absorb and use for energy, growth, and…

["post-7134","page","type-page","status-publish","hentry

What Is the Digestive System?
